Celebrating “Year of the Bird” in 2018!
Dear Friends,
Meet Bernie and Kyeeka, my caique parrot friends. They enjoyed it when I read them this article “Why Birds Matter”. Did you know that 2018 has been named the “Year of the Bird” by National Geographic and its partners? And why not? Birds can be found on every ocean and on every piece of land in the world.
They are a lot like us—raising families in houses they build, taking long winter vacations to warm places, solving problems and communicating in complex languages. Some use tools, some dance, and most sing. Their songs have lifted my heart on many a day, and their amazing ability to fly has inspired wonder, awe, and envy.
There are a thousand scientific reasons why birds matter to the world and why we should protect them. But even before I knew those reasons, one thing has always been true for me— I love birds! They soothe my soul and make me want to sing. Their morning songs give me a reason to open my eyes and smile. My life and my songs wouldn’t be the same without them.
If you also love birds and would like to learn more about them right in your own yard, check out this list of ways to create a bird-friendly yard by our friends at the Audubon Society: Create a Bird-friendly Yard- Audubon Society. You can also listen to my songs about birds:
“Honk, Honk” – about geese and the cooperative ways in which they migrate.
“Everything Is Connected” – The second verse sings about an important role that birds have in their ecosystem.
Both songs can be found on our CD, EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED and Other Animal Songs for Kids”.
With love for birds and all of nature,
Birdsong
