Watch an amazing metamorphosis!
Dear Friends,
Prepare to be astonished by my time-lapse footage of a monarch caterpillar metamorphosis, accompanied by our song, “I Almost Kissed a Butterfly”. Special thanks to my dear friend and devoted fan, Mary Franz, for providing some of the additional photos and video. How did I capture these awesome moments? Here’s the story behind the video:
Last spring I planted a pollinator habitat in our yard that included many flowering plants as well as native milkweed, the only plant that the caterpillars of a monarch butterfly will eat. Summer brought with it many pollinating creatures, including monarch butterflies who then laid their tiny white eggs on the milkweed leaves. Imagine my delight! I brought some of the caterpillars and milkweed indoors to give them a better chance to make it to full maturity. Eleven caterpillars successfully made it to the chrysalis stage and emerged about two weeks later as beautiful monarch butterflies. I was able to capture some of their metamorphosis with a time-lapse camera and have included that footage in this short music video. I hope you are as awe-struck as I am by this peek into their amazing transformation!
Teachers and homeschooling parents, check out our companion Google Doc lesson for grades K – 2. It includes activities, crafts, and additional resources for the learning to continue — as well as a download of our song, “I Almost Kissed a Butterfly”. Enjoy!
Fluttering with butterfly wonder,
Birdsong
